Free green waste disposal for Mitchell

Seymour Telegraph - - NEWS -

Resource Recovery Centres in Mitchell Shire will offer free green waste disposal for two days a week in November to help people keep their properties fire ready.

Leaves, twigs, garden weeds, grass clippings and tree branches under 30 cm in diameter can be dropped off for free during opening hours.

Seymour is open on Saturdays and Mondays, Broadford on Saturdays and Sundays, Pyalong on Sundays and Mondays, and Wallan on Saturdays and Sundays.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson encouraged people to take advantage of the service as part of their fire season preparations.

‘‘Permits for burning off won’t be issued after Monday, November 5 and CFA fire restrictions are likely to begin soon, so we offer the free green waste service to help people keep on top of their fire safety preparations,’’ she said.

‘‘Based on community feedback last year when we only offered the service on weekends at all sites, we’ve changed the days for Pyalong and our temporary site at Seymour to allow more options for accessing the service.

‘‘Please be patient as this is a busy period. You can help speed things up by making sure your load doesn’t include branches bigger than 30 cm and making sure it doesn’t include noxious weeds, rubbish, wire or other contaminants.’’

To make use of the free drop offs, residents will need to show their drivers licence with a current address in Mitchell Shire.

Property owners who live outside the shire will need to bring a copy of their rates notice and photo identification in the same name.

The green waste will be turned into mulch, which may be available for residents in coming months, depending on volume and quality.

The green waste disposal service costs council about $120 000 to provide each year and is funded through general rates income.
