Five years

before The Wicker Man, Christopher Lee starred alongside Boris Karloff in this enjoyably clunky cult thriller. Antiques bore Robert Manning ( Mark Eden) visits the village of Greymarshe. He spends the night at Casa Lee, where he dreams about long- dead local witch Lavinia ( Barbara Steele) and her animal- masked cult. But are they just dreams? What do you think?

It’s rote stuff, enlivened by the psychedelic “dreams” and a liberal dash of BDSM chic. An entertaining, if unremarkable, precursor to such genuinely smart shockers as Witchfinder General and The Wicker Man.

Commentary by Barbara Steele; Making Of “Creating Curse Of The Crimson Altar”; an interview with Lee. Will Salmon
