Invasion Of The Fans Top Of The Docs

Geek Syndicate guys talk fandom for the Beeb

SFX - - Red alert - Watch out for the BBC’s sci- fi season on BBC Two and the iPlayer from mid- November.

Wouldn’t you know it? you

wait ages for a sci- fi season and two turn up at once. As well as the BFI’s country- wide Days Of Fear And Wonder festival the BBC is getting in on the act, with a star- studded BBC Two series hosted by Dominic Sandbrook, and a trio of iPlayer documentaries, two of which are hosted by podcast supremos Dave Monteith and Barry Nugent.

“It started with an email from John Das, who’s the producer,” Nugent explains. “He found us because he’d listened to some episodes of Geek Syndicate. It’s one thing knowing that people listen to your podcasts, but it’s another knowing people from the BBC listen as well. Maybe we shouldn’t have sworn so much!”

The first documentary, Invasion Of The Fans, focuses on fandom in all its cosplaying, convention-going glory. The second sees Barry and Dave attending a series of events for the BFI’s Days Of Fear And Wonder, including a special screening of Flash Gordon at the British Museum.

For Dave and Barry, this is the culmination of a near decade- long journey in broadcasting. “We started eight years ago and we didn’t really take it seriously,” says Monteith. “But one of the geek mantras is to dream big, and here we are.”

“I was like, ‘ Are you kidding me?’ I think that will be on my gravestone. It’s how I’ll be

remembered” Joel Schumacher’s the only person still surprised by the negative reaction to

the Bat- nipples.
