This morbid gothic horror from Italian director Mario Bava features lashings of kink. Christopher Lee ( dubbed, distressingly) is the black sheep of an aristocratic family who returns home, is stabbed by hands unknown, then terrorises the object of his desires from beyond the grave. Or does he?

A pervy piece, it’s liable to raise feminist eyebrows – in a key sequence, Lee’s glaring sadist whips the blouse off his sister- inlaw, whose pain is clearly mingled with masochistic pleasure. But it’s hard to take an artefact this camp too seriously. And a different kind of ravishing is equally memorable: the one Bava performs on your eyeballs with his colourful lighting.

Extras: Expert commentary; a Lee interview; an overview piece; trailers; a gallery.
