Experiments with projecting the mind across time and space are the focus of this perfect example of how strong performances can salvage a silly script. Something is making British boffins’ brains go bang. Meanwhile, one scientist ( John Neville) has a new missus, Julie, who doesn’t blink. Coincidence?

It brims with unintentional hilarity – such as the moment Julie gives herself away by handling a scalding casserole dish – and far too much time is expended on people arguing in drab offices. But charismatic turns from Kubrick regular Philip Stone, Patrick Newell ( The Avengers’ Mother) and the amusingly overwrought Neville render even these dreary scenes bearable.
