Doctor Who fans will be overpowered by déjà vu watching this low- key British SF thriller. It’s based on a storyline by writer Robert Holmes, who recycled elements for Jon Pertwee’s debut. Another detail – a temperature- raising forcefield which surrounds a hospital – has echoes in a later Third Doctor adventure.

After a car knocks down a PVC- clad bloke from the planet Listerine – sorry, Lystria – two female aliens come to capture him. Who’s the “baddy” is far from clear.

The under- populated night- time setting conjures a bleak, lonely atmosphere, while deft characterisation and overlapping dialogue foster a surprisingly strong sense of verisimilitude. Momentum’s lost in the final reel, but early on it’s impressively taut.
