Neil Gaiman’s love of myth and fairytales is well known, and many of his best- loved works consist of his own spins on classics. Here he’s reunited with Chris Riddell ( The Graveyard Book; Fortunately, The Milk) to create an illustrated short based around the combining of two traditional tales.

Seventy years ago, a princess pricked her finger and the city around her fell into sleep. Now that sleep is spreading, and slowly every person in the surrounding cities joins her. A nearby queen, herself no stranger to magical slumber, heads towards the castle to protect her kingdom from the spreading menace.

It’s a dreamy, clever revision of the folklore in classic Gaiman style, and Riddell’s pictures combine perfectly with the text to create a world that’s both magical and grittily real.

Gaiman has another fairytale retelling coming out in December: Hansel & Gretel, illustrated by Lorenzo Mattotti.
