The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers

SFX: The Sci-Fi and Fantasy Magazine - - Greatest middle-earth moments -

How can we sum up the brilliance of this mighty fight scene, surely one of the greatest ever committed to film? Gritty, visceral and breathtakingly realistic – despite the fact half the participants are monsters – it’s an extraordinary feat of cinema from start to end ( see Number 18). But its best moment probably lies in the minutes before it begins, as the pressure is ratcheted ever upwards: rain pings off armour; an Uruk- hai roars and bellows steam; King Theoden says despairingly: “So it begins.” And then, in a stunning example of scriptwriting, the tension is briefly broken when Legolas asks the view- challenged Gimli, “Shall I get you a box?” Just magnificent.

The final season of Takeshi’s Castle took a dark turn.
