THE PITCH

How to psychoanalyse a robot. Starring not one but two of Star Wars: Episode VII’s cast ( Isaac and Gleeson), written and directed by 28 Days Later/ Sunshine scripter Garland and boasting a highbrow concept, Ex Machina already reeks of SF quality... but can it live up to expectations? It sounds good on paper: a billionaire creates a robot woman and, after holding a raffle, one of his employees wins a trip to visit him in his Alaskan retreat. There, he has to figure out if said robot girl actually has consciousness or not. “It’s very allegorical to the human experience,” says Isaac. Deep, man... and it certainly sounds better than Johnny Depp AI clunker Transcendence.
