This live- action movie of the manga and anime of the same name makes some significant changes; it still involves a demon butler, but now it’s set in the future, not Victorian England, and his master isn’t a boy, but a teenage girl disguised as a boy. We said: “The first hour is pretty terrible, with selfconscious acting, so- so fights and an air of chronic silliness. However, it improves notably in the second half, becoming fun, exciting and even touching in the denouement. However, it’s only worth trying if you know Black Butler already; newbies will be lost.”
