Synched to the release of Avengers: Age Of Ultron, this is a breezy, colourful primer on Marvel’s signature band of heroes, written with insight by longtime comic book writer Peter A David.

The bright design and oversized type skew young but David’s commentary is informed if breakneck, skimming the title’s history before spotlighting four of the team’s big hitters: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk ( Black Widow and Hawkeye are cruelly snubbed). These chapters expand to cover the heroes’ wider, comic- hopping careers, shortchanging anyone who wants an in- depth look at the Avengers title itself – key players like Ant- Man and the Vision are little more than footnotes and on occasion you’ll ache for more in- depth coverage of some classic storylines.

The true joy of the book is found in the removable items tucked into various flaps. From fold- out posters to cover roughs to a reproduction ID card for Captain America’s Sentinels of Liberty ( a Nazi- busting drive to mobilise the nation’s youth in the ’ 40s), it’s pure geek plunder. Nick Setchfield Jack Kirby’s last piece of art for Marvel was a 1976 sketch of the Hulk’s face – it’s reproduced here.

The Red Skull takes aim during World War Two.
