Dice Are Go!
FAB board game being Kickstarted
Licensed boardgames are a mixed bag; for every brilliant Battlestar Galactica there’s a Starcraft Risk, which is little more than an existing favourite given a fresh lick of paint. With the 50th anniversary of Thunderbirds just six months away ITV Studios has partnered with manufacturers Modiphius and acclaimed Pandemic creator Matt Leacock for a co- operative boardgame set in the world of International Rescue, and Leacock promises his Thunderbirds will remain faithful to the Supermarionation classic.
“The design was a juggling act. In addition to creating a game that generates new, engaging stories, each element needed to stay true to the spirit of the show. For example, we had many discussions on how many characters could be in Thunderbird 1,” Leacock says. “Details like this need to be right for play balance [ and] to be consistent with the world.”
Assuming the role of the Tracy brothers or Lady Penelope, players work together to foil the Hood’s evil schemes while completing global rescue missions. The challenge comes in trading off the dangers of short- term emergencies with the Hood’s long- term threat.
Unusually for a licensed game, Thunderbirds is taking the Kickstarter route. “We are using Kickstarter to help cover the cost of the moulds for the plastic ships as well as fund much nicer print qualities, custom dice and a 3D Hood figure. Stretch goals will increase the choice of characters, provide lots of other exciting vehicles, plus a few more surprises!”
Thunderbirds: The Co- operative boardgame will be available later this year. Visit www.thunderbirdsboardgame.com for the latest information on the game’s Kickstarter.
