The Predator star and writer- director of Iron Man 3 is a fanboy at heart
Favourite SF/ Fantasy Film
My favourite genre film is The Exorcist, and it always has been. It doesn’t age a day. It got me to make movies. I saw it and was transported by it. I was thrilled by the depth to which it shook me, and the amount of realism. Everything I ever wanted to do in movies was in The Exorcist.
Favourite SF/ Fantasy TV Show
I remember The Night Stalker having the same effect, the [ TV film] that Richard Matheson wrote. It was everything I’d never seen, which was this fusion of horror and procedural and a funny lead with great wisecracks. And here’s a guilty secret — I’ve watched every episode of The Vampire Diaries [ laughs].
Favourite SF/ Fantasy Book
The best genre book I’ve ever read is Robert McCammon’s Swan Song. I lived that book, man. As far as other horror things go, I love this British guy Graham Masterton. He’s a little pulpy. I’d probably recommend Prey, that’s his Cthulhu redux.
Favourite SF/ Fantasy Heroes
I read Doc Savage endlessly and fantasised about being one of the members of his team. But really it was this concept of friends under fire. The Kirk, Spock and McCoy thing. I remember rushing home to watch Star Trek in syndication. I went to Star Trek conventions in Pittsburgh when I was 12, 13 years old. They had reels and they would show episodes on the wall in one of the rooms of the hotel. I was like, “I’m in fucking heaven!” As a kid, Star Trek was everything.
