This second book in the Shattered Sea series picks up the story some years after Half A King, and although Yarvi is still present he’s no longer the character of focus. Instead, the story follows Thorn and Brand, a pair of wayward teenagers playing their roles in securing Gettland’s future. Thorn is a delight, all snarls and blood lust, which complements Brand’s gentler strengths.

Half The World feels more like YA, probably thanks to the surprisingly tender ( and glaringly obvious) romance. There’s still a fair amount of Abercrombie’s signature laugh- out- loud humour, and plenty of blood and gore, though the book doesn’t feel as grim or dark as the last one – perhaps the author’s saving all that for the third instalment? Bridie Roman Joe Abercrombie was killed off by Terry Brooks in The High Druid’s Blade, thanks to his editor’s winning charity auction bid.
