1980 | 18 | Blu- ray German director Ulli Lommel was a regular collaborator with Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Banned as a video nasty for a few years, his 1980 horror is now making its UK Blu- ray debut. Twenty years on from stabbing his mum’s bullying boyfriend to death, a guy and his sister are terrorised by a vengeful spirit contained within a mirror which “witnessed” the killing. The supernatural backstory makes this an interestingly atypical slasher ( though Halloween was clearly an influence, so were The Exorcist and The Amityville Horror), plus there are some effectively creepy ideas ( once the mirror’s broken, shards of it induce people to suicide) and pleasingly gruesome deaths.
