There’s a distinct whiff of late- night telly about The Atticus Institute. Presented as a documentary, it tracks down the scientists who studied a case of demonic possession back in the ’ 70s. It’s not hard to imagine channel hopping and landing on this.

It’s pretty convincing, too, using grainy still photographs and decaying video footage to supply vintage jump scares. The only problem, really, is that we’ve seen this kind of narrative too many times for any of it to be surprising; the gurning and growling of the possessed woman is all par for the course. More interesting is the government conspiracy angle, but though that’s well- observed, it never quite manages to be scary.

Nine minutes of behindthe- scenes chat. Sarah Dobbs
