Unbreakable ( 2000)
Cannily forging a compelling comic- book movie long before Marvel launched its cinematic universe ( though the same year the similarly prescient first X- Men was released), M Night Shyamalan proved he was ahead of the curve with his follow- up to The Sixth Sense. Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson are perfectly cast as total opposites – one an indestructible lunk, the other a frail genius – and the film itself is a dark, thrilling fable, and the last time Shyamalan was truly great.
