Long be­fore Dis­ney started crank­ing the cogs on its live- ac­tion fairy­tale re­dos, Guillermo del Toro de­liv­ered his own skin­crawl­ing bed­time story. Grim but beau­ti­ful, Pan’s Labyrinth is awash with night­mar­ish im­agery, boasting one of cinema’s nas­ti­est bad­dies ( the skull- smash­ing Cap­tain Vi­dal). The old- school pros­thet­ics are a dream, too, with Doug Jones tak­ing on nu­mer­ous mon­ster roles. “Shoot­ing Pan’s be­came a war about me not com­pro­mis­ing,” del Toro said. He won.
