pirates: how’s that for an attentiongrabbing idea? In a world still reeling after the supervolcano under Yellowstone National Park erupted and blocked out the sun for years, pirate ships now sail the oceans. Their crews salvage floating, post- tsunami junk; particularly wood, as it’s now worth its weight in gold as fuel.

Toby, a young scallywag on the Phoenix, finds his life changed forever when he meets Ayla – the daughter of dangerous pirate Nell on the enemy ship Banshee – and a quest begins.

The world- building here is admirable, the characters are fun and there’s plenty of derring- do on display. The writing could’ve been a little tighter and more dynamic, perhaps, but otherwise this is one crew we wouldn’t mind sailing with again. Jayne Nelson
