Marvel’s never

been afraid to explore the kookier edges of its comic- book universe, and they don’t get much kookier than Doreen Green, aka Squirrel Girl. A teenage hero with the proportional strength and speed of a squirrel ( and a nifty bushy tail), she’s been battling evil in her own offbeat style since 1992, and now she’s finally got her own ongoing series featuring unpredictable adventures, hilarious humour and lots of squirrels.

These first four issues have a loose, engaging style as Doreen becomes a student at Empire State University, but has to balance her normal life with unexpected battles against villains like Kraven the Hunter, Whiplash and the worldeating Galactus. Charming, self- aware and accessible, it’s an all- ages superhero romp pitched as pure comedy, and Marvel have sensibly drafted in Adventure Time comic writer Ryan North, who showcases exactly the right blend of wit and weirdness.

Every page is packed to bursting with jokes, and while Erica Henderson’s stylised and cartoony art takes a little getting used to, it matches the ludicrous tone and pulls off a massive number of adorable sight gags.

This kind of all- out comedy doesn’t always have staying power in today’s comic marketplace ( the recent, similarly fun She- Hulk run only lasted 12 issues). But while it’s hard to say exactly how long The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl may last, it’s worth treasuring every issue, as this is a gleefully nutty and thoroughly enjoyable superhero adventure. Saxon Bullock The original artist to draw Squirrel Girl ( who also designed her first costume) was Steve Ditko, co- creator of Spider- Man.
