Stars and gripes

De­spite its on- again, offa­gain

love af­fair with science fic­tion drama and adventure, Amer­ica has been less will­ing to em­brace the con­cept of genre com­edy. Yet with his ex­pe­ri­ence work­ing on the Amer­i­can ver­sion of The Of­fice, Brides­maids direc­tor Paul Feig would seem to be the ideal choice to merge the awk­ward, nervy en­ergy of that show with a funny homage to sci- fi tropes.

He ac­tu­ally pitched Other Space to net­works years ago, but dis­agree­ments over shoot­ing style and tone meant the em­bry­onic idea was float­ing in con­trac­tual limbo un­til around 2013. Now Feig has headed on­line with Ya­hoo to bring the show to life. Set in 2105, it finds a young, in­ex­pe­ri­enced and of­ten whiny crew pi­lot­ing the Uni­ver­sal Map­ping Project ship called Cruiser when they’re sucked into a dif­fer­ent uni­verse and must fig­ure out how to sur­vive: yes, it’s es­sen­tially a silly take on the idea ex­plored dif­fer­ent ways by many sto­ries, in­clud­ing Star Trek: Voy­ager.
