Despite its on- again, offagain
love affair with science fiction drama and adventure, America has been less willing to embrace the concept of genre comedy. Yet with his experience working on the American version of The Office, Bridesmaids director Paul Feig would seem to be the ideal choice to merge the awkward, nervy energy of that show with a funny homage to sci- fi tropes.
He actually pitched Other Space to networks years ago, but disagreements over shooting style and tone meant the embryonic idea was floating in contractual limbo until around 2013. Now Feig has headed online with Yahoo to bring the show to life. Set in 2105, it finds a young, inexperienced and often whiny crew piloting the Universal Mapping Project ship called Cruiser when they’re sucked into a different universe and must figure out how to survive: yes, it’s essentially a silly take on the idea explored different ways by many stories, including Star Trek: Voyager.
