Brian Ald­iss dubbed space opera “widescreen baroque”. Heav­ily in­flu­enced by the new weird and cy­ber­punk, Alastair Reynolds reengi­neered it as a kind of widescreen gonzo grand guig­nol where grotesque things hap­pen to morally am­bigu­ous peo­ple. Science fic­tion re­ally hasn’t been the same since. Rev­e­la­tion Space was so daz­zling it helped to per­suade M John Har­ri­son to re­turn to space opera.
