For too many years, the fu­tures con­jured up by SF writ­ers, at least those that have got at­ten­tion in the US and Europe, have de­scribed western fu­tures. For all it was writ­ten by a pale- skinned chap in Belfast, River Of Gods – set in the balka­nised In­dia of 2047 – was key in open­ing up a space for Asian and African writ­ers to tell au­di­ences about their worlds.
