John Barry was born 3 Novem­ber 1933 and died 30 Jan­uary 2011. His fa­ther was a for­mer pro­jec­tion­ist who later owned a chain of pic­ture­houses in the north of Eng­land. Barry ar­ranged Monty Nor­man’s James Bond theme for Dr No and scored a fur­ther 11 films in the se­ries. His last en­try was 1987’ s The Liv­ing Day­lights. He won five Os­cars across his ca­reer and was nom­i­nated for two more. From Rus­sia With Love saw Barry in­tro­duce “007”, an al­ter­na­tive James Bond theme that fea­tured in the films un­til 1979’ s Moon­raker. The eight- note open­ing of Di­a­monds Are For­ever re­flects the eight sides of a diamond.
