An approach to Austrian actor Maximilian Schell suggested he was already close in personality to Reinhardt, The Black Hole’s magisterial, humourless scientist.

Nelson: “He said he would only do it if he met with the director before he signed on. I said, ‘ Can you come to LA?’ He said, ‘ No, I’m filming at the moment.’ I said, ‘ Perhaps we could meet halfway?’ He said, ‘ Halfway is the middle of the Atlantic.’ I said, ‘ Well perhaps we could meet on your U- boat?’ And there was this long transatlantic silence.”

Despite the awkward exchange, Schell signed on and turned out to be one of the film’s high points.
