How did this film come about?

The movie was born from the con­ver­sa­tion we had about how to get to Jus­tice League. And then just talk­ing about how to move for­ward: who would take on Su­per­man? Next thing we knew, we’re talk­ing about how they would fight each other.

How did you find the bal­ance of screen time with Bat­man and Su­per­man?

We never really looked at it like, “Oh, we should have 30 per cent more Su­per­man here, and more Bat­man.” It was much more or­ganic to the story that we’re telling. It’s not a Bat­man movie any more than it’s a Su­per­man movie.

How does Lex Luthor fit into the mix?

I feel like Lex is one of the great vil­lains in the DC uni­verse. We had to be very care­ful with it be­cause he’s such a par­tic­u­lar vil­lain. That’s amaz­ing fun, and in­cred­i­bly sat­is­fy­ing and in­ter­est­ing, to take a char­ac­ter like Lex and really try to understand him.
