The Goonies

( 1985)

SFX - - Richard Donner -

I liked Steven Spielberg a lot. He was an acquaintance. I got a call from him one day, and he said, “I got this screenplay I want you to read.” I said, “Oh, swell.” I got the screenplay and I started reading it, and I said, “Wait a minute. This is a Steven Spielberg movie. Why isn’t he doing this?” I had never worked with a lot with kids. So I called him and I said, “Why aren’t you doing this?” He said, “I have a project that I’m going to start and I want to get it done soon. I always remember you as being as big a kid as I am. I think you’d be perfect for it.” It turned out to be a tough relationship to get started on, but as it did get going I was so in love with those kids… I never thought it possible. It was all Steven. If he had said anything else, I probably would have figured, “Maybe the script’s really not good and I’m reading it wrong.” I was very defensive [ laughs]. But it turned out to be one of the great delights of my life.
