The creation of writer Archie Good­win and artist John Romita Jr, the bul­let­proof brawler first ap­peared in Luke Cage, Hero For Hire #1 in 1972.

Cage briefly joined the Fan­tas­tic Four, re­plac­ing the Thing as the team’s mus­cle when Ben Grimm found him­self back in hu­man form.

Luke Cage isn’t his real name – he was born Carl Lu­cas. Young Ni­co­las Cop­pola liked the more heroic sur­name and rechris­tened him­self Ni­co­las Cage in trib­ute.

The Comics Code Au­thor­ity in­sisted he watch his lan­guage. Clas­sic Cage pseu­dos-wears: “Shoot!” and “Sweet Christ­mas!”

Quentin Tarantino wanted to bring Power Man to the big screen in the ’90s, favour­ing Lau­rence Fish­burne for the role.

In 1978 Cage formed a part­ner­ship with mar­tial arts hero Iron Fist as their comic books were merged. Iron Fist is also head­ing to Net­flix in 2017.
