Craig from Bridlington says: “I bought this Denys Fisher Tom Baker doll (which looks nothing like Gareth Hunt, whatever some people say!) from a secondhand shop in Hornsea in the late ’80s. I think he was about a fiver! Sadly, the little sonic screwdriver was missing when I bought it, but I’ve still got his hat, and the box – which is in pretty good nick. Any idea what he’s worth?”

KATHY TAYLOR OF VECTIS SAYS:

Toy company Denys Fisher, in collaboration with US toymaker Mego, made a great line of Doctor Who toys in the 1970s. Denys Fisher was born in Leeds, originally using his skills as an engineer manufacturing military components prior to inventing the Spirograph drawing toy, then selling out to Mego in 1970.

The Tom Baker 9.5” action figure came with hat, scarf and sonic screwdriver. There’s an urban myth that the head sculpt was taken from a Gambit (who was played by Gareth Hunt) New Avengers figure, but that idea was recently debunked by former Denys Fisher head of research and development Peter Viner. The Doctor was also released in an Italian version which is more often found. In addition, the US version has a different head sculpt.

Auction value for this item in good condition would be £40-60, in mint condition £80-100. Search that loft!
