It’ s morphin’ time!

The Power Rangers return to comics with this new ongoing series from Boom!

-

More than 20 years ago a group of brightly coloured teens took over the world with the debut of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, the TV series that spawned a $ 6 billion merchandise empire. Now the Rangers are leaping back into action with Boom! Studios’ new series by writer Kyle Higgins and artist Hendry Prasetyo.

Their tale begins just after Tommy, the Green Ranger, has escaped the control of Rangers’ nemesis Rita Repulsa. “Even as a kid, there was something a bit tragic about his story,” says Higgins about Tommy. “He was the outsider, the new kid who was handpicked by the bad guys to be an agent of destruction, given powers against his will and turned into a weapon.”

While the plot begins in season one of the show, the comic is set in the present. “The series is designed to be a bit more grounded and contemporary,” says Higgins. “Hendry and I aren’t looking to do a ’ 90s nostalgia book or greatest hits album. We’re looking to capture the spirit of the original series, adapted for a new era and a new medium. We’re also exploring a lot of the inner workings of being a Power Ranger that the show was never really able to get into. Things like Ranger training and threats that take them outside of Angel Grove.”

And exploring the Rangers’ lives when not fighting monsters: “For all the big action and the world- ending- stakes, Power Rangers is a story about people,” says Higgins. “These are normal kids… with the weight of the world on their shoulders. How do you manage that, plus hold onto any semblance of a normal life? High school is a tough road to navigate even without the pressures of being a superhero.”

Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers is out now from Boom! Studios.
