DESIGNING THE FUTURE
I was the first hired member of staff on Blade Runner. Ridley Scott and I had a great relationship. I was hired to design the vehicles and, because I’m an artist, I started painting my designs in situ. I read the script, and during that first reading, Ridley said, “This is not going to be Logan’s Run,” that sort of refrigerator white [look]. I knew the story and the dystopian nature of the city setting, so I painted the scenery behind the vehicles and put them in place. He appreciated that and, essentially, I painted my way into the rest of the picture: props, interior views and exterior views.
