the 1960s were complicated. as we’ve already mentioned, the Cold war raged between russia and america. weapons got more powerful and out of the arms race grew a different kind of race – the space race, capturing the collective imaginations of a nervous world after JFk announced his ambition to land a man on the moon. It was this sense of spacefaring optimism that inspired Gene roddenberry’s vision of the future. In Star Trek, the nations of the world have formed starfleet to explore the universe. From The
Original Series to the JJ abrams reboot, Star Trek has always been about the best possible future for the species and, while things don’t always work out (hello, khan!), Trek maintains an unreserved sense of optimism.
