Dynamic duo enjoys farm life
Long-time horse trainer and Ardmona hobby farmer Ivan Lister lives on a 24 ha property with his wife Jennifer and two children, Maxwell and William. Adding to the Lister clan are Majak, the purebred boxer, and Lilly, the Jack Russell. The two are great watchdogs and work in tandem when beef cattle are on the property, while during summer you will often see them taking a dip in the channel.
How did Majak get his name?
We got Majak from Steve Hyde, who runs a bakery in Benalla, and he was a North Melbourne fan and he’s named after Majak Daw. Luckily Max goes for North Melbourne, too. What makes them great watchdogs?
At night-time, if it’s cold we have them inside. If there is a fox they will hear it from inside and you have to let them out. Give them 20 minutes or so and they come back in again. They are great watchdogs. What are their personalities like?
They are very playful. She (Lilly) is spoilt rotten — she spends most of her time inside. She knows what’s going on. You only have to say say bed and she will be inside hiding because she doesn’t want to go outside.
Lilly is as sharp as a tack. She’ll chase anything that moves. She’ll chase magpies in the sky, hoping they’ll fall out of the sky.
(Majak) had never seen cattle and he used to chase them. Now he lies beside them in the cattle yard. What is their working ability like?
She would muster the cattle and he leads the cattle. It’s more about enjoying life. They enjoy life as much as we do. What do they like to do when they are not working?
They love the channel and the big dam and will hop in during hot weather. Max is 20 and William is 17. When they were younger they would be in the channel with the dogs. They are great companions if Jenny’s in the garden. Lilly always wants pride of place. She’s always after affection. How do they get on with other animals?
They don’t like other dogs on the farm; they are very protective. What would you do without them?
I couldn’t think about it. It would be unbelievable. I get a laugh out of her (Lilly) every minute of every day. Words and pictures: Rodney Woods ■ Do you have a dog or dogs you’d like to nominate for Man’s Best Friend? Phone Rodney the Dog Man on 5820 3259 or email him at: email@example.com
