Build­ing on basics

The Grass­land So­ci­ety of South­ern Aus­tralia’s an­nual con­fer­ence was held at Nagam­bie last week.

The con­fer­ence, in its 58th year, ti­tled Build­ing on Basics: Inve$t and Grow , saw speak­ers in­form farm­ers about soil man­age­ment, risk and farm man­age­ment, pas­tures and feed base, and live­stock graz­ing and per­for­mance across the two­day event.

On the first morn­ing (September 6), about 120 peo­ple heard about soil man­age­ment from South Aus­tralian se­nior re­search sci­en­tist Ross Bal­lard and CSIRO Agri­cul­ture and Food re­search sci­en­tist Dr Richard Simp­son.

Mr Bal­lard talked about strate­gies to im­prove N2-fix­a­tion by sub-clover and lucerne, while Dr Simp­son talked about man­ag­ing the phos­pho­rus cy­cle in clover-based pas­tures.

Congupna and Mans­field farmer Jim Vasey and Incitec Shep­par­ton agron­o­mist Lee Men­henett at­tended the first morn­ing of the con­fer­ence.
