Water allocations lift

Shepparton News - Country News - - NEWS -

Water allocations for northern Victoria have been increased for the Goulburn, Murray and Loddon systems.

The Murray system has increased from 90 per cent to 98 per cent of high-reliability water shares.

The Goulburn system and the Loddon system both increased from 60 per cent to 71 per cent HRWS, while the Broken system increased from 27 per cent to 36 per cent HRWS.

The low-reliability water share seasonal determination in the Campaspe system increased from seven per cent to 16 per cent.

The seasonal determination in the Bullarook system is unchanged at 100 per cent HRWS and 100 per cent LRWS.

Northern Victorian resource manager Mark Bailey said flows into the major storages continued to increase water resource availability across the region.

‘‘The wet catchments are producing useful flows after rain,’’ Dr Bailey said.

‘‘The increased seasonal determinations announced (last week) have come from the steady improvement in storage volumes.’’

Dr Bailey said Victoria could not store all the flows into its share of Lake Hume during August.

‘‘Victoria’s share of Lake Hume filled in late August and 23 Gl of flow into the reservoir could not be stored.’’

He said about 10 per cent of the spillable volume would be deducted proportionally from Murray system spillable water accounts and environmental water accounts.

‘‘Further deductions from Murray system spillable water accounts and environmental water accounts are possible this season.’’

Goulburn-Murray Water managing director Pat Lennon said all signs pointed to an optimistic outlook for at least the next few months for customers.

‘‘This is particularly the case for irrigators right across the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District,’’ Mr Lennon said.

‘‘In the weeks leading up to the re-opening of the irrigation season on August 15, and after experiencing dry mid-winter conditions, we were expecting to receive many requests from our farming customers wanting to place water orders.

‘‘However with recent rainfall across the GMID — impacting positively on all our irrigation districts — many customers are able to delay dipping into their water allocations until later.

‘‘This current low demand for water makes for a great start to the irrigation season.’’
