A Queens­land cane farmer has died af­ter a burnoff at a prop­erty north of Townsville went wrong.

The 59-year-old suf­fered burns to 90 per cent of his body af­ter the fire broke out just be­fore 7 pm on Mon­day at a cane farm near Cool­bie.

A Queens­land po­lice spokes­woman said the man died from his in­juries in hos­pi­tal on Tues­day morn­ing and the blaze was not be­ing treated as sus­pi­cious.

The Queens­land Cane Grow­ers Or­gan­i­sa­tion is­sued a state­ment on Tues­day pay­ing its con­do­lences.

‘‘Farm­ing com­mu­ni­ties are close and there will be peo­ple shocked and hurt­ing across the sugar cane in­dus­try to­day,’’ Cane­grow­ers Her­bert River chair­man Michael Pisano said.

‘‘This is a tremen­dously sad and dev­as­tat­ing event, re­mind­ing us of some of the in­her­ent risks we face in farm­ing and that the safety and wel­fare of our peo­ple is the high­est pri­or­ity at all times.’’
