A Queensland cane farmer has died after a burnoff at a property north of Townsville went wrong.
The 59-year-old suffered burns to 90 per cent of his body after the fire broke out just before 7 pm on Monday at a cane farm near Coolbie.
A Queensland police spokeswoman said the man died from his injuries in hospital on Tuesday morning and the blaze was not being treated as suspicious.
The Queensland Cane Growers Organisation issued a statement on Tuesday paying its condolences.
‘‘Farming communities are close and there will be people shocked and hurting across the sugar cane industry today,’’ Canegrowers Herbert River chairman Michael Pisano said.
‘‘This is a tremendously sad and devastating event, reminding us of some of the inherent risks we face in farming and that the safety and welfare of our people is the highest priority at all times.’’
