Happy with ram sale results
A total of 22 rams were sold at Hynam Poll Dorset Stud’s inaugural on-farm sale, with an average price of $1204.
Rams went to mainly local buyers, with Seymour-based Bassett Rural the largest volume buyer on the day, purchasing nine rams with a top price of $1300.
Euroa, Pine Lodge, Longwood and Serpentine were also represented in the bidding, with rams also sold to Great Western and Dundonnel studs.
The sale’s top-priced ram went for $2200, bought by Meltonbased North Monea Farms.
Stud owner Kevin Hynam said he was largely pleased with the result of the sale, which saw 50 rams put up for auction.
‘‘There’s been a bit of action and we’re happy with the attendance,’’ he said.
‘‘We presented about 40 that have been solely in the paddock . . . we’re fairly pleased with the results and what we’ve presented.’’
Having moved from the Mallee to Longwood two years ago, Mr Hynam said the rams had adjusted well to the wetter climate, but he continued to look for ways to fine tune the flock, including increasing staple length.
‘‘We’re happy with the results,’’ he said.
The sale gave bidders a look at the Helmsman system, with reserves for all rams set at $1000, before 20 minutes of bidding opened up, allowing interested parties to peruse the lots and place bids in $100 increments.
Following the first round of bidding, the sale continued in twominute allotments before there were no more bids.
Suggested by auctioneer and Elders north-east district wool manager Rex Bennett, Mr Hynam said it ensured there was plenty of time for bidders.
‘‘It just gives them that time to readjust and rethink,’’ he said.
Longwood’s Tom Brodie and Peter Bjorksten of Euroa watched the sale action closely.
