Five-Star safety for Outlander PHEV
The Australasian New Car Assessment Program has extended the Mitsubishi Outlander’s maximum five-star safety rating to its new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variant.
To be launched next week, the new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV comes with a long list of standard active and passive safety features including front driver and passenger airbags, side, curtain and knee protection airbags, Super All-Wheel Control system with Active Yaw and Stability Control, reverse camera and rear parking sensors. The Outlander PHEV Aspire also gains Mitsubishi’s advanced active safety technology system, e-Assist, comprising of two functions – Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Collision Mitigation.
Mitsubishi Motors chief executive Oshikiri said the
Australia Mutsuhiro Outlander PHEV and Outlander range offer SUV drivers the highest degree of safety.
“The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV inherits the advanced safety technology features found on the petrol and diesels variants delivering a no-compromise safety package for customers,” Mr Oshikiri said.
“As Mitsubishi Motors move towards a new generation of products with advanced plug-in hybrid systems, the Outlander PHEV demonstrates our commitment to offering vehicles that meet the highest safety standards along with outstanding performance, fuel efficiency and value.”
The Outlander range uses Mitsubishi’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body which provides high levels of safety for all impact directions by combining a high impact energy absorbing structure with a high yield strength cabin structure. To protect and strengthen around the under-floor drive battery pack, the body is reinforced with four welded cross frames to the underbody side members.
Using a radar system, the Adaptive Cruise Control monitors the vehicle in front, allowing the driver to follow at one of three selectable distances. The system regulates motive power, applies the brakes as necessary and can bring the vehicle to a halt reducing the danger of collision. Forward Collision Mitigation uses the same radar system to detect slow or stationary vehicles in front, emitting an alarm and automatically applying the brakes to avoid collision.
