Toyota leads industry to near-record sales
Toyota has led the automotive industry to financial-year sales exceeding 1.1 million for only the second time on record, according to official figures.
Industry sales of more than 1.12 million in 2013–14, while marginally lower than the all-time high of 1.13 million vehicles sold in the previous financial year, were well ahead of the 1.06 million total achieved in 2011–12.
The sales count shows Toyota’s dealers again delivered more than 200 000 sales in the latest financial year to June 30, giving it a margin exceeding 90 000 vehicles over its nearest rival.
Toyota results were boosted by a strong end-of-financial-year performance in June, topping 20 808 sales for the month and more than 101 000 for the first six months of this calendar year.
In June, Corolla was Australia’s best-selling car for the fourth consecutive month with 4648 sales, its highest monthly result since December 2010 and its best June in six years.
The HiLux workhorse was runnerup nationally with 4276 sales, making June the sixth time in the past 15 months the two popular Toyota vehicles have achieved the quinella.
Toyota’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the industry continued to achieve strong sales, tracking above 1.1 million sales in 2014 after a near-record June tally of 118 309 sales.
“Australia’s automotive sector remains remarkably buoyant with almost 560 000 vehicles sold so far this year — the second highest total ever achieved in the first half of a calendar year,” Mr Cramb said. “The January-June total is within just 2.5 per cent of the alltime record set last year, which is an excellent result in the face of tough federal and state government budgets and a national economy that is in a transition phase,” he said.
“The outlook for new-vehicle sales is positive with the certainty of another full-year total well in excess of one million vehicles and Toyota contributing at least 200 000 of those sales.”
Toyota’s first-half sales of 101 105 vehicles were 78 per cent higher than its nearest competitor, with no other brand having reached 60 000 sales.
Other highlights for Toyota in the first half of 2014 include RAV4 with a record 9327 deliveries — 22.1 per cent higher than at the same stage last year.
