Crews rescue P-plater

- By Sionnie Kelly

A 20-year-old female probationary driver is in a stable condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital after a truck and car collided at Bunbartha yesterday.

Shepparton police Sergeant Gerard Warrin said the truck and sedan were travelling in opposite directions on the Barmah Shepparton Rd near Medland Rd about 8.45 am.

He said the woman was driving the sedan and was heading towards Shepparton to start work when the collision happened.

Sgt Warrin said it was still too early to determine what caused the accident.

‘‘But the vehicles have collided and the truck’s veered into a tree,’’ he said.

Sgt Warrin said the male truck driver was not injured during the collision.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the woman was trapped for about an hour in her vehicle and was assessed by paramedics before being flown to Melbourne and arriving at the Royal Melbourne Hospital at 12.10 pm yesterday.

Sgt Warrin said that the Shepparton Search and Rescue personnel did a fantastic job of rescuing the woman by using the jaws of life.

Police, Country Fire Authority members and Shepparton Search and Rescue blocked off both lanes of Barmah Shepparton Rd after the collision.

Police are investigating the incident and anyone with information can phone Shepparton police on 5820 5777.
