Fourth try for seat

- By Thomas Moir

He’s the Abraham Lincoln of Greater Shepparton City Council candidates.

At least according to serial candidate Bruce Little himself.

Mr Little will next month contest his fourth Greater Shepparton City Council election since the turn of the millennium.

So why does he continue to stand?

For the simple reason that ‘‘nothing has changed’’.

‘‘Nothing at all,’’ Mr Little said. ‘‘There are influences within the council who have a domineering effect on other councillors. This has got to be removed.’’

Mr Little said he had more time on his hands now to commit to serving the region if elected.

He said ‘‘50 years of watching, and taking it in, and just seeing their mistakes’’ left him well equipped to advocate for change.

‘‘I don’t think they’ve done anything really well, which is of great concern,’’ he said of the outgoing council.

Mr Little said instead of spending tens of millions of dollars on SAM, council should instead ‘‘concentrate on fixing the roads’’.

‘‘Why would any council spend that amount of money to please less than five per cent of people?

‘‘Driving up the south end of Maude St, I think the motion sickness would get you, it’s bloody shocking,’’ he said of the road surface.

Despite this, Mr Little is certain he would enjoy a seat on the new nine-member council to be elected on October 22.

He said he was running independent of other candidates because he did not wish to ‘‘enter into the hypocrisy of this issue, the deceit, that is involved in preferential voting’’.

If elected, Mr Little’s to-do list includes scrapping the new SAM, turning more attention to city infrastructure, and to ‘‘get rid of the bloody money they waste’’.

‘‘I think people have woken up to the waste that’s been going on,’’ he said.
