Shiny new home
GVL HALL OF FAME TO BE DISPLAYED AT NEW AFL GOULBURN MURRAY OFFICE
The trophy cabinet from the Goulburn Valley League’s previous headquarters at Dunkirk Ave will take pride of place at the newly renovated AFL Goulburn Murray headquarters in Kialla. GVL Hall of Fame committee chairman Freddo McMahon and secretary Don Kilgour take in the set-up.
AFL Goulburn Murray has moved into its newly renovated office space at Kialla.
Having spent the winter in portable offices, employees were excited to open the space that is set to meet the required needs of the growing organisation.
The expanded offices adjacent to Shepparton Park Bowls Club will also be the new home of the Goulburn Valley Hall of Fame.
With the display yet to be installed, the trophy cabinet from the Goulburn Valley League’s previous home at Dunkirk Ave is already on show.
AFL general manager Martin Gleeson said it was fantastic to ref lect the history of the league.
‘‘It was always something that the GV wanted to have, getting the Hall of Fame up and going,’’ he said.
‘‘When we did the designs we put in a GV Hall of Fame wall and we cut out that space for the trophy cabinet because we wanted to bring a bit of old into the new and that’ll be a trophy cabinet used for all leagues.’’
AFL GM has quadrupled in size from its three employees in 2013, including Netball Victoria representatives that also use the office.
‘‘That’s through some of the work we’ve done, the demands on football and netball clubs are getting higher and higher, so we want to keep adding some services to what we’re doing,’’ Gleeson said.
‘‘It’s great, it’s been a long time coming and there’s room to move now and finally we’ve got a really good working facility.’’
The new space has a distinct red and black feel, with the Essendon Football Club donating most of the desks and cabinets.
Bombers chief executive Xavier Campbell has strong links with the region as a former Echuca player and instigated the transfer of the furniture from the AFL club’s previous home base at Windy Hill.
A board room has also been created that will serve as a space for tribunal cases to be heard.
● As part of the official opening of the offices, Victorian Sport Minister John Eren also announced a free football festival in Shepparton would occur on the AFL grand final public holiday this year.
Taking place in Maude St Mall, the day will begin with a volunteer breakfast with two members from each club in the region invited to be recognised at function.
A big screen will show the grand final parade through Melbourne, with AFL players to be in attendance as well as face painting and jumping castles.
All smiles: AFL Goulburn Murray general manager Martin Gleeson opened the newly refurbished office space at Kialla yesterday.
