Thomas Jewellers to close doors

Thomas Jewellers in Wyn­d­ham St, Shep­par­ton, will close down in a move head of­fice has de­scribed as a ‘‘re­fo­cus’’.

The Thomas Group will be clos­ing down its chain of jew­ellery stores in Shep­par­ton, Bendigo, Bal­larat and Al­bury.

In a writ­ten state­ment, Bourke St Mall head of­fice said the move would re­fo­cus at­ten­tion ‘‘to ar­eas of strength and growth within the busi­ness’’.

‘‘This news marks the end of an era and the be­gin­ning of an­other,’’ a state­ment read.

‘‘The Thomas Group will be lever­ag­ing the cur­rent growth in the cap­i­tal cities to con­sol­i­date and ex­pand its com­mer­cial and res­i­den­tial port­fo­lio.’’

in the Thomas fam­ily — with a new ten­ant to be un­veiled next year.

In 2010, Alex Lay­cock broke in through the roof of the store in Wyn­d­ham St, Shep­par­ton, steal­ing nearly $200 000 worth of jew­ellery.

A dis­carded can of Coca-Cola left from a low-level break-in more than a decade ago helped catch him.

The News ap­proached Shep­par­ton’s store man­ager for an in­ter­view but Thomas’ Group man­ag­ing di­rec­tor Jamie Thomas said she was ‘‘not avail­able’’.
