Shepparton’s Watters Electrical third-year apprentice Shaun Davis proved to be the brightest spark at this year’s WorldSkills Regional Electrical Installation Competition.

Mr Davis took out first place and is now eligible for selection to represent Victoria in the National WorldSkills Competition in Sydney next year.

During the competition, Mr Davis had to wire up a switchboard, several appliances and some outlets.

‘‘I wasn’t expecting to win at all, I went there and I thought, ‘I’ll give it a crack’ but I was a bit pessimistic on the situation so it was a bit of a surprise to win,’’ he said.

This was the first time Mr Davis has competed in a competition like this, which took eight hours to complete.

Mr Davis’ Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE electrical teacher Darren Cooke suggested he enter the competition.

Mr Cooke said it was the first year GOTAFE had entered electrical students in the competition and they competed against Bendigo TAFE.

In total seven apprentices went head-to-head against each other and Mr Cooke said the competition was a real test of skills.

Watters Electrical administration manager David Bassett said it was fantastic Mr Davis had taken out first place in the competition.

‘‘For him personally and for our business, it’s fantastic,’’ he said.

Mr Davis said he had enjoyed being an apprentice electrician because of the variety of work.

‘‘The guys are great to work with here and there’s heaps to learn,’’ he said.

As for the National WorldSkills Competition in Sydney next year, Mr Davis was not expecting to win that one.

‘‘I don’t think I’ll get all the way through but I’m happy to have a go at it,’’ he said.
