Barton nails baskets to save the night
Shepparton Lady Gators came from the clouds to defeat Wallan by a point in a thrilling clash on Saturday night.
The Country Basketball League north-east game went down to the wire, with captain Rhianna Barton proving to be the hero.
Barton sunk two free-throws with 29 seconds remaining to give the Gators the lead after the Panthers were in front by as much as six points early in the last quarter.
The former Victoria Country Big V captain dragged her team across the line, with Barton finishing with a game-high 25 points in a dominant display.
Barton had some good support from Kristy Down (10 points), while assistant coach Naomi Amos and Sarah Down were next in line with six points each. It was a crucial win for Chris Judd’s Gators, who lost in the opening round against Wodonga before winning their last two.
Wallan was best served by Jayda Hunter (13 points), Carley Cranston (11) and Macy Byrnes (10).
The Gators have a break this weekend before a double-header on November 11 and 12 against Seymour and Myrtleford.
