Juniors prove a winning combination

Shepparton News - - BOWLS - By Alex Mitchell

Kyabram’s remarkable division seven rink — consisting of three eight-yearolds and a 10-year-old — made its club proud last weekend, knocking off Euroa by a single shot to help the side to victory.

The youngest rink in Goulburn Valley bowls history left its charge late, grabbing the lead on the final end to win its rink 25-24, helping the Power to a 50-39 overall victory.

Skip Jacob Cartwright, 8, drew shot on the last end, capping off the brilliant play all game from Charlie Boswood, 8, Henry Boswood, 10, and Liam McInnes, 8.

Club coach David Cartwright could not have been more proud of what the agedefying rink had achieved and said the entire club had shown the youngsters plenty of appreciation.

‘‘Last week they were at Euroa, we had three teams at home and there were probably 60 people in the clubhouse — once they came home, it was a standing ovation from all of them,’’ he said.

‘‘It was amazing, there were a few tears shed from a few proud parents. I won’t lie, I was one of them, after hearing my young fella had drawn shot on the last end to win by a shot.

‘‘It’s just created a new vibe around the club, I’ve said it before, it’s a credit to the Kyabram Bowls Club to accept these guys and enjoy having them here.’’

The young rink fell in its first game against Nagambie before notching up the maiden win, returning to its home club this weekend alongside the club’s division one and two sides.

Cartwright said his club was not just about success at the top level, more so creating a positive atmosphere for all involved.

‘‘That’s what we pride ourselves on at Ky, we’re a club and not individuals,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s just been sensational, we haven’t been able to watch them too much because we’ve been playing, so it will be great to be alongside them this weekend.’’

Young guns: Liam McInnes, Jacob Cartwright, Henry Boswood and Charlie Boswood after their rink won their first game together.
