CHARMED BY ARAJILLA

To Carolyn Lockhart, Lord Howe Island is one of the most serene places on earth. This tiny dot in the cobalt-blue ocean off the coast of New South Wales has mist-shrouded peaks, swathes of native palms, white sands and a lagoon where huge turtles swim.

I was eager to experience Arajilla Retreat, one of the few luxury operations on the island, famed for both its gourmet food and Ayurvedic spa. An unpretentious driveway opens up to the main house with welcoming wide verandahs. From here wooden walkways meander through gardens of shady banyan trees to the 12 airy, private suites furnished with natural fabrics by Sydney designer Julie Paterson.

I’m welcomed to the spa by Ayurvedic health consultant Scott Allan who is part of the family that owns Arajilla. With more time available it would be rewarding to access the tailored treatment and yoga programme. However, all it takes is the hour-long massage and I’m totally relaxed, lulled by a background of birdsong and gentle waves upon the beach below. www.arajilla.com.au | www.oxleytravel.com.au
