Helsinki is that per­fect thing, a small city eas­ily ex­plored on foot, where great de­sign per­me­ates al­most ev­ery as­pect of daily life. At first glance it’s a con­ven­tion­ally pretty euro­pean town sit­ting on a penin­sula in the is­land-strewn Gulf of fin­land. the hand­some, high-set lutheran cathe­dral and brood­ing Rus­sian church over­look the city’s broad es­planade and mar­ket square where tiny stalls sell fur jack­ets, sal­mon soup and rein­deer meat­balls.
