One of the biggest problems facing big cats in Africa is coexisting with farmers. Big cats find cattle, goats and donkeys easy prey. The Maasai have very little defence against these animals and after one gets into a boma and kills their livestock, the cat is usually hunted and killed. When the directors of Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary were approached last year by Diane B. Miller from Lion Lovers in the US to donate money towards Light for Life, an NPO working in Kenya with the Maasai, we jumped at the chance to assist. We funded two bomas, one in the Maasai Mara and the other in Tanzania. Lion Lovers raised over US$13,000 for Light for Life, which has now installed light systems in 37 bomas: 31 in Kenya and 6 in Tanzania. No livestock has been lost since the installation.
