Take just one of Pony McTate’s epic sea crea­tures and turn it into a fun, quick-to-hook brooch

■ Scheep­jes Ca­tona (100% cot­ton, 10g/25m), 1 ball of: Water­melon (252)

■ Scheep­jes Maxi Sweet Treat (100% cot­ton, 25g/140m), 1 ball of each: Pow­der Pink (238)

Jet Black (110)

■ A 3mm (US C/2 or D/3) hook

■ A 2.5cm brooch clasp

■ A ta­pes­try nee­dle

OCTOPUS BROOCH

HEAD

Us­ing Water­melon, ch7.

Row 1 (RS) Dc in sec­ond ch from hook, dc in next 4 ch, 3dc in last st, work­ing back down the un­worked side of the foun­da­tion ch, dc in last 5 ch, turn. [13 sts]

Row 2 (WS) Ch1 (does not count as a st through­out), dc in first 6 sts, 3dc in next st, dc in last 6 sts, turn. [15 sts]

Row 3 Ch1, dc in first 5 sts, htr in next st, 2tr in next 3 sts, htr in next st, dc in next 4 sts, ch3, ss in third ch from hook (eye bump made), dc in last st, do not fas­ten off.

[10 dc, 2 htr, 6 tr]

ARMS

Row 1 (RS) *Ch16, ss in sec­ond ch from hook, dc in each ch to end, ss in next 2 row ends on the Head; re­peat from * 3 times more work­ing the last ss into the first st from Row 3 of the Head, turn. [4 Arms] Row 2 (WS) Ch1, ss into the ss at the base of the last Arm made, *ch16, ss in sec­ond ch from hook, dc in each ch to end,ss into next row end from th Head, ss into the ss at the base of the next Arm; re­peat from * 3 times more. [4 Arms]

Fas­ten off and weave in ends.

EYE

Us­ing Water­melon, make a magic loop. Round 1 Ch1, 6dc into the loop. [6 sts] Fas­ten off and use the yarn tail to sew the Eye onto the Head, us­ing the im­age as a guide. The eye bump made at Row 3 of the Head sug­gests the sec­ond Eye.

Us­ing Black, stitch a French knot into the cen­tre of the Eye.

SUCKERS

With WS fac­ing, use Pow­der Pink to work a run­ning st beginning at the top of the Arm. Once you reach the tip of each Arm, se­cure the yarn around the last st and work a run­ning st back along to the top of the Arm, in­sert­ing the nee­dle un­der the same sts.

TO FINISH

To make up the Brooch, use Water­melon to sew the Octopus onto a brooch clasp. Work small stitches and check the RS to make sure they aren’t vis­i­ble on the front.
